Hot Water – Luxury or Necessity?
Taking a nice hot shower or soaking in a bubble bath has become a normal part of our personal hygiene and relaxation rituals. Yet not that long ago (well, a little over a 100 years ago but you know how time flies and all), few Americans were lucky enough to enjoy the luxury of automatic hot water in their homes.
In 1889, Norwegian mechanical engineer, Edwin Ruud, who immigrated to Pennsylvania a few years prior, designed the first automatic storage tank water heater which led to more and more households enjoying the luxury of automatic hot water. Thank you Mr. Ruud!
Handle With Care
Just like the other parts of our home plumbing system, we rarely think about our hot water source. That is until we’ve got a full head of shampoo lather going on and our steamy shower suddenly turns icy cold!
While an unexpected cold shower isn’t pleasant, it’s far better than what could happen if you have a traditional storage tank hot water heater that leaks or bursts. Did you know that flooding as a result of water heater failure is one of the top five residential water loss claims according to a study done by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety? This startling statistic is a reminder that we need to monitor our hot water heaters and be proactive with maintenance.
When Should Hot Water Heaters Be Replaced?
There are several factors to consider when making this decision. The age of the unit, whether or not its had routine maintenance, the amount of sediment buildup from hard water (the Greater Phoenix Area is known for its hard water) as well as the condition of the anode rod (rust protection).
If you’re unsure about the health of your water heater, we can inspect it to determine if it needs maintenance or if it’s time for a replacement.
Navigating The Hot Water Heater Options
There are many options available including the traditional storage tank water heater and the popular tankless water heater, also known as instant water heater or on-demand water heater. Deciding which unit is best for your needs can be overwhelming. There are pros and cons to both types of hot water heaters, and our technicians are fully trained to inspect, maintain and replace water heaters so they’ll be able to answer any questions you might have.

“We called Niemeyer a couple of months ago to come out and re-route/move our washer and dryer. They had to come extend and move the water supply lines, drain line, and gas line. They came out promptly and finished quickly in one afternoon. The tech they sent out was great, he was informative and knowledgeable about what he was doing. After our good experience with Niemeyer we then referred them to a friend who has had them come out twice, once to install a new water heater and a second time to do a few other things as part of a remodel. Our friend was also extremely pleased with their timeframe, work quality and their competitive prices. He had previously had other companies scheduled to install his water heater who did not show up more than once, Niemeyer showed up the first time and got the job done.”Chris B. on Yelp
